One of the strongest storms ever recorded hit the Philippine’s November 8th last year –Typhoon Haiyan – and we were amongst one of the first agencies to respond.
Having already established work in the Philippines, our national workers saw first-hand the devastation that had been caused; and what was needed to help.
With over 7000 people dead or missing and over 1 million people having lost homes, with millions more affected – this was a national calamity; one that is not easy to recover from. This was the deadliest typhoon in the Philippines history.
One year later progress has been made thanks, in part, to your kindness.
Relief goods were distributed including water, rice, noodles, canned goods, bread, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste and some medicines to affected communities.
EHGC began working in local communities, fixing roofs, walls and posts to rescue homes destroyed after the Haiyan Typhoon swept through. 471 homes were rebuilt and 4 churches which were also used as relief centres. National workers and Volunteers surveyed local communities ensuring needs were being met in the best way.
“People have seen hope” National Director Emer says “people now have the courage to continue with their lives”.
While the relief efforts have ended, there are still families needing assistance to continue with the rebuilding of their lives.
120 families in a community in Samar in the Philippines, one of the places the typhoon was at its most catastrophic still struggle to rebuild their lives, their homes and their livelihoods.
